Sculptor derives energy from materials

Leinster Leader, August 12th 1999

Sculptor Derek A Fitz Simons, 52, claims to derive 'energy' from the materials he works on to produce symbolic pieces of art.

The self-taught sculptor said he did not set out with a plan beforehand but drew inspiration from the energy he felt from the material.

"Its like a conversation between the stone and me,' he said at the opening of the Stone and Wood Sculptors Camp at Reservoir Park here yesterday.

The Irishman was one of 21 international sculptors participating in the camp, a curtain-raiser to the second International Delphic Games to be held here from Sept 1 to 7.
For the camp, Fitz Simons was working on a three-stone sculpture titled 'Reborn'.

"The main stone is a 'spirit stone' beckoning the people. It will have many faces carved on it, each with a different side," he said.

The two other stones symbolised a fish, one as the head and the other, its tail.
